Indeed. Also consider the wake was usually held in the house, and people would be traveling to pay their last respects.

Restaurants and lodging weren’t as widely available so it wasn’t uncommon to be feeding people for a week or more.

This is a cultural holdover of earlier times that may not prove quite as practical nowadays, but is fueled by a genuine sentiment.

True. And remember before the interstate highway system it took a lot longer to travel, and a lot more stressfull
