Will be flying into Venice in May to stay 3 days prior to boarding a cruise ship. Suggestions please.
Any info on what transportation is available other than renting a car will be useful also.

If you’re in Venice you walk. There are no cars. It’s a pretty easy city to walk. St. Marks cathedral and the square is a must even though it’s packed. The gondola ride was fun. We really like just walking the city and checking out what was around the next corner.

I understand the beach just south of the city is a nice place to hang out.

Check this site LINK
See if they have an interesting food/wine walking tour in Venice a day that you are there. I have used them twice for a private tour, outstanding both times. Husband/wife small company. He's Italian and she is American. They offer wine tours in the countryside, but your stay is too short.

Once you get on one of the main walkways or “vias”, hang a right or left, go two or three blocks, and then start exploring. Just wander around the non tourist areas and you will have a much more interesting and “real” experience of Venice.

Remember…you are on an island. You can’t get lost!!!

Just ask anyone,”Dové Piazza San Marco.” They will point you on your way.

I presume he's staying in "new" Venice. There's an entire city on the mainland.

Renting a car in Venice? Make sure it floats. If your cruise leaves from Venice you will certainly not need a car.

If you do need a car you get them from Piazalle Roma which is the square the train station is on. We once drove to Venice from Tuscany and turned the car in there with difficulty because it was Easter Sunday and everything was closed.

If you see all of the major sites in Venice in 1 day and do not want to see Murano or Burano, I would train it to Verona for a day. Very cool city. We trained to it from Milan back in September and that train went on to Venice. Very easy to get to.
