The mother was apparently a malignant narcissist and the father emotionally unavailable. The brother is apparently a raging a-hole who couldn't get over the fact that his sister was more talented. It's notable he's never had much of a career since she died. There were rumors of incest, but who knows. It's clear the whole family was abusive toward Karen, who subsumed it into an eating disorder that ultimately took her life.

I watched the full documentary that Richard was heavily involved in, and I never detected this. He had a drug period, but lots of musicians did. Those who discount his contribution should really watch the documentaries. None of their stuff would have been possible without his arrangements.
