Religion is a basis for morality. Absolute morality. Law, and therefore politics, is based in either absolute or relative morality. It's fairly linear to discern why the religious advocate and vote a certain way.

Probably not. The world and the US in particular has a lot of people convinced that the laws THEY want are somehow based on something much better than moral values. It’s those other people who want to “legislate morality”, not them. I thought philosophy was a silly elective when I took it in college but it should absolutely be taught at the high school level.
