Will he win the Heisman? No.
Will he be one of the top 4 or 5 favorites next year if he comes back? Yes.
He always had crazy talent, but his body was so physically undeveloped early on his career. We were also run heavy. After his freshman year, we had the COVID season where ASU only played 4 games and missed an entire month straight where one side of the ball was wiped out and then the other. Basically no practice in the middle of an already abbreviated season, and all his WR's were freshmen or sophomores. There were some gamers there, but they were RAW. Johnny Wilson (FSU's top guy), Ricky Pearsall (Florida WR2 now), Elijah Badger (ASU's WR1). They weren't ready at the time and really hung JD out to dry. Tons of drops and just not being on the same page. Then it got worse as the NCAA stuff came in and several of their coaches were pushed out.
He lost a lot of faith in people even catching the ball for a bit at ASU. That's why he takes off so much. It's something he learned. It's something he's going to unlearn with a more developed WR group... ASU had killer talent at WR, but it was so, so young at the time and he'd been used to NFL guys like Aiyuk and Darby his freshman year.
Now he's with y'all, and he's starting to settle in. He's also much more physically mature. Dude looked like a bobblehead early on, allegedly playing at 165 his first year. Bigger, stronger, faster, better talent around him. He's gonna start putting up some real big numbers eventually too. It took him a while, but the finished product of JD could be something else. It's easy to look at the athleticism and forget that JD is one of the most prolific passers to ever come out of Cali.
