Thing is, we actually can compete with Saban and Kirby. It's even been proven on the field. At Auburn, 10 win seasons aren't the barometer for success. Winning the division and competing for and winning SEC and National championships is.
That fact alone leaves a large chasm between AU and OM.
That isn't the issue at hand. Zoom Out. Why would anyone willingly go to Auburn and be judged by how they compete with the 2 best programs in the country? That is a death sentence for a coach.
Not to mention the fastest boosters to turn on you in the country.
And a roster that is gutted.
Lane ain't taking it. He could get Texas, UF, UCLA, Oklahoma, Alabama all in the next 2-5 years. He has no reason to force himself in the middle of Saban and Kirby. Not when he is at a place with complete autonomy and the coldest of seats in the country.
But keep thinking this decision is only about OM and Auburn and the gap between the 2. It just flat out isn't.

I never said he was.
But to compare the two programs being discussed in the realm of possibilities where Lane takes a look, there is Zero comparison.
And you just named 4 of 5 schools (3 of 4 taking out Bama) that will be in the same league league as Kirby and Saban. The point YOU are missing is that to win titles you have to be at the Alabama's and Georgia's. Which Auburn has proven it can do more often than everyone else in the league. It's what separates the LSUs, Florida's, and Auburn's from the rest of the teams that are terrified for the Big Bad Bammers to walk in and beat you before the game starts. Auburn has been playing, and winning, in the big boy (top 5 or 6 teams). Auburn has had one of the toughest schedules for decades year in and year out.
Auburn can pay more, pay more for assistants, has a bigger fanbase, has better facilities, has a bigger national brand...any metric you want to look at for the program as a whole is a no brainier for any person looking to win and the choices are Ole Miss or Auburn.

Just to play Devil's advocate.
Because confident coaches believe they can beat those guys. Kiffin has, without any doubt, that level of confidence.
Or he might not get any of those chances. Have we ever seen it in his history where he waited 2 years for the better opportunity? He took the Florida Atlantic job, when you could have argued in another year he would have gotten a much better offer.
This is 100% true. But he has shown he can work the portal. And perhaps worrying to some Ole Miss fans, I think a lot of his current team would choose the coach over the school.
I am not saying he is going to Auburn, but you are so dismissive of it. The truth is AU has had more shots at national titles than his current spot. It has better facilities and historically recruits better. While all of that may not be enough, do you really think he would not at least consider it?
