There is something you aren't telling or I would be asking for my CPA's malpractice insurance rep's name

Just got the letter. Apparently income was under reported. Like I said, our taxes are pretty benign. I don't own any rental property anymore or anything. It's just income tax and any other standard deductions or tax credits and a few investments that I get standard tax statements for. I'm trying to get with my accountant to figure out WTF happened.

Please do this. I don’t think you were audited unless you were told that’s what was happening beforehand and asked to provide more information. The IRS’s stupid computer system spit out a nasty letter because it couldn’t match something up on your tax return. These are wrong very often and in that case take nothing more than a simple explanation from your accountant.

You need to talk to your CPA because the IRS doesn’t complete an audit and notify you after the fact. Hell make sure the notice is even real. With a tax situation like you’re describing you 1) aren’t reporting enough income 2) someone fricked up a 1099, or 3) your CPA is a dumbass.

I got one Saturday. They said I owed them $775 instead of them owing me $1,800. They completely left out the $12,500 I claimed for buying energy efficient windows. There was no explanation at all in their difference of what I claimed and what they said I owed. CPA said he would file an appeal with them but because of the backups at the IRS it might take up to a year to get it corrected.
