If you wait a week, Gears of Way 2 comes out on the 7th and Call of Duty 5 comes out the next week.
Also probably want to grab Halo 3 - that's pretty standard for any XBOXer
These are all FPS btw, not sure if thats what you're looking for exactly.

Hands down, the best war game is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It can probably be had for $30 on ebay or at GameStop (used).
Call of Duty: World at War comes out November 11, and it'll be really good as well.

Call of Duty 4 and im throughly enjoying Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, its much more realistic in terms of when you throw a grenade and its oerfect they dont just fly up in the air, their limbs blow off and shite, body blown in half. a good head shot can sometimes take off a good part of the head....just...just pretty awesome

Are you looking for a great multi-player or single player experience ?
As mentioned above, The Orange Box is far and away the best deal. Half-Life series is GREAT single-player, Portal is awsome, and Team Fortress is a blast.

where can you get halo 3 cheap? used on ebay maybe, but its still 60 bucks in stores new
