My son just turned 13 and has an interest in learning how to play the Guitar, we found him some classes in BR and he has to find 10 songs that he'd like to learn how to play.
Any song suggestions for someone just learning that will teach him some beginner fundamentals?

Thanks

Its best if he picks his own favorite songs. This way he will be able to maintain interest in playing. I assume the teacher will be able to work with what they are given. As far as beginning guitar, learning chord shapes is probably the most important thing followed by scales. Good luck.

I've found that Van Halen's Dance the Night Away does quite a bit with few chords. I think I found a nice video on youtube that shows how it's done.

Farther down the journey, I loved playing with Sultans of Swing. So much going on there!

Good luck.

I also agree with the other post about learning a song he loves. If he gives the teacher a list they'll most likely take the easiest of them to start teaching him the chord shapes. Best advice for your son is practice, practice, practice and know that that his finger tips will be sore in the beginning but will only be temporary. Some of the most popular "rock" guitarists spent their youth obsessively practicing in their bedrooms honing their craft. Best of luck to him.

Here’s some of the early ones that I learned to teach different skills:
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (how to make harmonizing guitar leads via the intro and learning basic chord progressions)

Funk #49 - Joe Walsh & the James Gang (learning how moving chord shapes up and down the fretboard changes them)

More than a feeling - Boston (learning to pick/strum chords melodically)

Carry On My Wayward Son - Kansas (switching between picking melodies and strumming chords)

You and Me - Lifehouse (songs where you hold down the third fret on the top 2 strings and move around from there)

Fairies Wear Boots - Black Sabbath (blues pentatonic scale)

Hands to Yourself - Georgia Satellites (blues I IV V progression)

Jessica - The Allman Brothers (learning technique for soloing in a major key while moving up and down the fretboard)

The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana/David Bowie (secretly a scales exercise that teaches them muscle memory).

Say I Love You In A Song - Jim Croce (teaches PIMA finger strumming technique)

Higher - Creed (great for teaching drop D, palm muting, and for incorporating leads into your rhythm playing)

Active Melody youtube channel. Best beginner-to-intermediate resource I've found yet.

Those songs are chosen for what they can teach not for what they sound like

There are few drop d songs that more simply incorporate leads into rhythms than Higher. It’s a really easy song to learn relatively well that actually teaches the player several technique lessons at once.

When I was learning, I had a really difficult time mentally switching between strumming chords and picking melodies. I also tended to mute notes using my fretting hand rather than the palm on my strumming hand. Those bad habits can’t survive learning to play “Higher”. And those leads are really easy with ample time to switch, so it’s something attainable that gets the lesson across without discouraging the player. Plus, “Higher” is the perfect song for trolling people.

Dead Flowers was the first some I learned on acoustic.

Iron Man on Electric
