If you are considering buying the Box Set of Books, then seriously consider these two books to accompany the series.
A Sea of Words (accompanying lexicon)
Harbors and High Seas (Maps of Series)
These two books really helped to make sense of all the nautical terms.

100% agree. And I'll add - be prepared to read a chapter or two of the first couple of books and then look back at the lexicon for some help understanding the terms.
My first attempt at the first book was slow. It took a while to understand the terms and the learn the characters. I found that my understanding really kicked in by the 3 book (HMS Surprise) and the pace of the stories picked up as well.
