black bear population

"Alabama: 200
Alaska: 100,000
Arizona: 3,000
California: 25,000 to 35,000
Colorado: 16,000
Connecticut: 800 to 1,000
Delaware: 0
Florida: 4,000
Georgia: 5,000
Hawaii: 0
Idaho: 20,000 to 30,000
Illinois: 0
Indiana: 0
Iowa: 0
Kansas: 0
Kentucky: 1,000
Louisiana: 700 to 1,000
Louisiana has 700 to 1,000 black bears. The state’s black bears are members of an endemic subspecies, the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus). The Louisiana black bear is the state’s national mammal and a conservation success story.
Maine: 35,000
Maryland: 2,000
Massachusetts: 4,500
Michigan: 15,000 to 19,000
Minnesota: 12,000 to 15,000
Mississippi: Unknown
Mississippi once had thousands of black bears and Louisiana black bears. Today, both bear species have been extirpated because of habitat loss and hunting. State biologists estimate there are only about 40 bears at most in the state. Habitat restoration is taking place, however, and conservationists are hopeful that black bears and Louisiana black bears will both return.
Missouri: 1,000
Montana: 15,000
Nebraska: 0
Nevada: 500
New Hampshire: 4,800 to 5,000
New Jersey: 3,000
New Mexico: 5,000 to 6,000
New York: 6,000 to 8,000
North Carolina: 20,000
North Dakota: 0
Oklahoma: 2,500
Ohio: 50 to 100
Oregon: 25,000 to 30,000
Pennsylvania: 16,000
Rhode Island: Unknown
South Carolina: 1,100
South Dakota: 0
Tennessee: 5,500 to 6,000
Texas: Unknown
The black bear and Louisiana black bear were native to Texas, but both species were wiped out. Biologists believe there might be 30 to 40 resident breeding bears. Conservation efforts have focused on reintroducing black bears to Texas. They are considered a protected species in the state, and it is illegal to hunt or trap them.
Utah: 4,000
Vermont: 4,500 to 6,000
Virginia: 18,000 to 20,000
Washington: 25,000 to 30,000
West Virginia: 12,000 to 14,000
Wisconsin: 24,000
Wyoming: Unknown
Wyoming only began counting black bears in 2019, although the state has always kept track of its grizzly population. Wildlife officials say the black bear population is robust and stable, but exact numbers are not available. About 500 black bears live in Yellowstone Park, which is primarily in Wyoming."

The accuracy of those population numbers are not all that great. A very conservative factoring is used across the board and then it is only as good as the people doing the surveys.

Case in point. Colorado has had deer and elk populations decline for over a decade now with the worst if it being in SW part of the state.

Low and behold somebody finally realized they were screwing up the back bear population calculations, giving an answer wrong by several magnitudes. Now you have $100 OOS bear tags and increased tag limits being proposed.

At the end of the day repatriated predators are a net negative for wildlife and now are nothing more than a tool for anti hunting activities.

No freaking way it’s that low. Hell I bet there are twice that many in Tensas Parish alone.
