It's sustaining their biggest voting edge. Women have voted Dem all of my life. Blacks vote Dem in a larger percentage but there are a LOT more women than blacks.
If the majority of women were opposed to abortion the Dems would not care about it.
The reason women vote Dem is cultural. It goes back earlier than the national right to vote. Women in the dozen states that allowed their vote in local/state elections demonstrated that they want LOTS of govt to take care of them. Personal freedom and self reliance scares the hell out of them.

If the majority of men were for abortion the Republican party wouldn't have made anti-Abortion a mainstay of their political platform and recruitment efforts beginning in the early 1980's.
