You don't have to like him. His skill set, roids or not, was second to none. He is a GOAT no matter how you slice it. I'll always say MLB let the roids slide in the late 90s early 00s to recover from the strike. They needed juice to get the fans back. You know they let Sosa v. McGuire roid all summer of '98. It was a boon.

Then why wasn't he considered the best player before he took injected a chemical factory into himself?

He was a very, very very very good player, yes, but he was Babe Ruth, even at 37 yrs old, after he started the juice regimen.

Griffey was always considered the better player in the early - mid 90s. Bonds was close, but probably thought of as the 2nd or 3rd best position player in the game at that point, not the unequivocal #1.

His numbers after BALCO, however, were other worldy.
