I did also find, weirdly, that not as many people spoke English in Madrid as in Barcelona or Seville. That is not their fault, its THEIR country so don't take it the wrong way, its just something a tourist needs to know.

Obviously many many still did.

But I looked that up afterwards and it is a thing. Because Madrid is the center of Spain and not focused on tourism, there are less English speakers per capita, allegedly.

True but I will say that in Barcelona a cabby said to me "don't speak English, speak Spanish". He was one rude fricker. Fortunately, my wife is 1/2 Cuban and fluent in Spanish.

They may also speak Catalan in Barcelona and forget about trying to speak or understand that shite.
