quote:
In 1900 Arthur Stilwell built the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. It was to travel from Kansas City to Topolobampo Mexico. Stilwell envisioned that Topolobampo would be a major port city and was a shorter route to Kansas City than Los Angeles was. He ran out off money and the banks would not give him any financial support and his railroad stopped at the Mexican border in Texas. The railroad was later bought by the Santa Fe. Stilwell also had started the Kansas City Southern Railroad.
Perhaps it is time to re visit Stilwell's plan ?
The portion of the line from the Mexican border at Presidio to NE of San Angelo is currently owned by the State of Texas, and once CBP completes an inspection facility at Presidio, the line can fully reopen for business.
