Why is it that The Silmarillion has never begun to approach the popularity of The Hobbit or of The Lord of the Rings?

It's because the First Age is depressing, that's why.

Amazon is not going to make money off Tolkien nerds. They need to have 20 million people watching this show. The story of the kinslayings is way too complicated and depressing to be a part of this TV show, in which elves must simply be regarded as "the good guys."

But its the point of the Oath of Feanor. That Oath destroyed everyone who took it and brought them into hell. You just don't bring it up just casually. It was probably the consequential decision the elves ever made.

Could they show that if they didn’t have the right to the Silmarillion?

And by the way, if that paper ship scene with a young Galadriel is important, flashback to it instead. Is that really the first scene in Lord of the fricking Rings you want to show your audience? Here's a reminder of another show of the first scene they showed to set the tone: Game of Thrones

Yeah, that appropriately sets the tone. If it's Galadriel sailing paper ship, then I'm good on this series.
