I am the opposite and work on my swing much more than that. I've focused heavily on the driver the last month and it's paying dividends now, much straighter, longer, and more reliable. Yeah, drive for show putt for dough, but the game is miserable when you are constantly 3 off the tee and searching in the crap for your ball.
I find I have unproductive range sessions when I focus on just one section of the bag in a session, like a mid iron day or a wedge day or a woods day. I am much more focused when I play simulated rounds.
Tonight for example, started off hitting 7i for about 10-15 strokes. Then switched over to driver for about 10-15. Then started a simulated round having to hit targets and yardages as I mentally worked my way through 18 holes. Driver, 8i. Driver, 7W, gap. 4W, 9i, gap. Etc, like that. That took 2 buckets and just about 2 hours.
Then hit the practice green for an hour working on various shots with my 56*, short sided, flops, pitches. Then various shots with gap wedge. Bump and runs with PW and 8i. Finally, short sided chips with the 8i, handle up, putting stroke.
I didn't even practice putting as I rarely 3 putt and it's overall pretty solid. Obviously I could always use practice though.
Hey, I was out of the house for 3 hours, I need to time manage practice.
And yeah, I don't think I've put together a round yet this summer where every phase has been clicking. One is always stronger than the other.

This is exactly what I do when I go to the range. Simulate a hole, and if I happen to mishit a second shot, I'll swing two or three with that same club to get that muscle memory. Then carry on. You NEVER hit the same shot twice in a row on the course, so why would hitting 20 balls with a 7 iron in a row be productive?
I get a large bucket of balls, and hit 6 or 8 shots with each club moving through the clubs, then start the simulation.
