Public universities were founded by the American public to provide low cost education for the betterment of society. Public education SHOULD be funded by tax payers, that is the point!

LSU's Lazy River and the Student-Fee Sham
quote:
There may be no better symbol of American higher education’s wasteful indulgence than Louisiana State University’s lazy river. Part of a recently opened $85 million recreation center, the lazy river is where students ride inflatable tubes on a water current in the shape of the school’s initials... When asked to defend the water ride, the administration was quick to respond that the students voted for it. As the Chronicle of Higher Education reported in October, “a student government resolution, passed in 2011, authorized a $135 fee increase over three years to finance the project.” ... We could have built half as large an expansion. But when we talked to the students, we’re seeing they want a climbing wall, they want an outdoor aquatic center.”
The article goes on to explain how "fees" are not covered by many scholarships, they are instead paid mostly by student loans. Students voted for this extravagant facility, paid for it with student loans and now taxpayers get to pay off those loans. But we never got to tube the lazy river.
Taxpayers don't want to fund resorts for young adults to frolic around for a few years. If you want public universities to be funded by a higher % of taxpayer dollars, they need to start looking a whole lot more community college-like and a lot less Beaches by Sandals.

My oldest daughter took one class from a local college in the summer to satisfy the requirement of her program. The fees for this three hour course in the summer were over $300. They included a technology fee, a student union fee, an activity fee and a stem fee. Make that make sense. She then had to rent her book from the school for an extra $75.
