Does using PayPal have any effect on credit card benefits?

If my card has purchase protection and PayPal has purchase protection, is it two layers of purchase protection, or does the PayPal purchase protection become exclusive because I didn't pay direct? Same for trip insurance, etc.
Additionally, has anyone noticed that using PayPal had adverse effects of earning rewards points? Mis categorizations, etc.

I'm aware of reports that Amex Plat credits for certain merchants won't work properly if done via Paypal because the merchant won't be recorded the same to the issuer.
The same thing would likely happen with categories. I don't know myself as I avoid it for this reason.
My PayPal is attached to a card that bonuses everything so I don't have to worry about it.

What is the best card to use for PayPal for points/reward purposes?

Discover will give 5% on certain months but I’m sure there is better

You technically have two layers or protection, but not in an all that great way.
Let's say you get scammed. You open a case with Paypal, but for some reason Paypal sides with the scammer. You open a case with your CC, they side with you. Paypal will get a charge back for that purchase, and then they will ban your account

As Fox said, some of the 5% cards will sometimes do a PayPal quarter (Chase Freedom being one).
But for PayPal on any day just pick any cash back/points everywhere card like Freedom Unlimited, Citi Double Cash, etc. with whatever bank/points ecosystem you prefer.

For what it is worth, using Paypal on eBay seems to work fine for reward credits on my Amex Plat. The charge shows up as eBay on my amex transaction.

Which would be fine, since in a case like that, I wouldn’t use them again anyway… ever.

It's highly unlikely that they would side with a scammer seller because the scammer couldn't provide the necessary evidence to support the sale. Just providing insight

Discover is doing 5% this quarter
