ECHL was a blast. Sadly, it’s never coming back though. We’re moving forward.
and small budget does not mean the league sucks. They’re growing responsibly without overextending themselves financially.
I think the best case scenario is for BR to get a FPHL team…and then eventually the FPHL AND SPHL merge and combine leagues to make a 24+ team league…with all the familiar names back that BR hockey fans know from the ECHL days, such as Pensacola Ice Flyers, Birmingham Bulls, etc. which used to be in the ECHL but now are already in the SPHL. Now you’ve got a full Southern league with Northeast/Midwest teams. So travel becomes more affordable and you’ve somewhat got enough exposure and teams to recreate the old ECHL glory in a whole new league.
It will also help that there are no icegators or brass this time around. BR will draw hockey fans from those areas.

I would also add, the SPHL is a step up in competition. The hierarchy is FPHL < SPHL < ECHL < AHL…so if there were a merger there would have to be some kind of redistribution of talent to make the league competitive. But that would be the pinnacle of what we could hope for in bringing back that old ECHL magic.
