I recall clearly an enthusiastic Tiger fan and friend yelling "That was a program defining moment!" immediately after the 2003 LSU win over UGA. He was proven exactly correct. If you look back on the LSU program, that day was indeed the point of inflexion in success and also pyschologically (moxy, confidence,etc..)

In the mean time, history shows the success - 2 national championships in a 5 year span.

Fast forward to October 25, 2008....

The LSU team is again at a point where it appears it can either retain its elite status, or possibly start the slippery slope that has hit so many programs in the last 15 years (Miami, Florida State, Nebraska, Penn State, Notre Dame, etc..) Yes, it can happen to ANY program. We are not immune to the possibility of moving slowly from the "TOP 5" - to "TOP 20" variety of a Program, and in a hurry. Yes, both are good, but one is great. LSU must retain the GREAT status.

Are the next 3 weeks the time when we will see which direction we head? Wins over UGA and BAMA will return us to the TOP 5 level that we momentarily have slipped from.

Come on Tigers! Lets rise up and RE-DEFINE our Program in the nations eyes.. They are many who have us written off as on that slide into a non-elite status, and we must rise up and manhandle UGA and BAMA so that we can get another shot at Florida in early December.

Programs are not defined against non-ranked teams. Not in the right direction any way...

Even so-called "top 5" programs don't find their way into the top 5 every year. To declare that this year will define LSU as either a "top 5" program or a "top 20" program is, to put it nicely, absurd. In the 10-year stretch from 2003 (your "defining moment" year)through 2013, 2008 rates, and always did rate, to be a "down" year. Sure, I hope we not only beat Georgia, but run the table in decisive fashion. But if it doesn't happen, if we lose 2, or, God forbid, even 3 more games, that doesn't mean the program is in anything other than a rebuilding year with lots of young talent on the field, and a mother lode of talent in the pipeline. The problem with too many LSU so-called "fans" is that they expect national championship runs every year. Not even the vaunted USC manages that. Get a grip.

Over reaction.

Redefine the program? We just won the Championship last year. Slipping from this elite status you propose takes more than a few games. Hell, after a tough road trip and we are down just one lost? Add a red-shirt freshman QB, losing Dorsey (key leadership), losing starting CBs (makes blitzing easier), losing a QB with loads of talent (but not loads of brains), Hester (dependable to say the least), and more.

The only people who have written off LSU from the elite status are people like yourself.

If people keep beating the war drums of how the SEC is the toughest conference and yet expected any SEC team not lose a game to remain elite just does not add up.

Come back to reality.

They've still got half their schedule to play. They lost at home to a 3-4 Ole Miss team for crying out loud. If they are looking past KY to the Cocktail party (and Urban has been making that their focus since last year) they might lose this weekend.

We can disagree on the importance of a series of games in the big picture. You are correct in stating or inferring that the QB position, and the 51 point debacle, are good and defensable reasons why we are off the radar screen ONLY MOMENTARILY.

Any student of psychology or physics knows how mental and physical momentum work. It is certainly plausible that losses to UGA and BAMA could 1) not affect the Program in the time going forward or 2) adversely affect the Program in the time going forward.

My post did not predict either. It did, however, recognize (after watching college football religiously over several decades), that both are possible.

I am a fan and a realist. You can be both. I certainly am rooting vigorously for the preferred route in the days going forward !!

I agree..I felt the USC game last week was huge because of our team's confidence could have really fell off the charts bad.. Look at AU right now! They are not that bad talent wise, they are just lost at the moment offensively

They are falling apart each week.

Confidence is huge to the way you play.

do you expect to win? Elite

Or hope to win? Top 15-25

Bottom line is we have a freshman QB with talent everywhere, the program as a whole is solid for years to come IMO

This class coming in could be LSU's best ever, and that would be pretty amazing. The future looks bright, if we beat UGA, it looks even more bright and so on

Yeah, no shite.

One loss, or even 3-4 losses in a season doesnt mean your program is in a tailspin.

Some people are way too over dramatic around here.

I would be happy with a top 10 finish this year.

The reports of LSU's demise, (even by it's own fans), are surely premature.

Why? Lose to UGA, then lose another to SC or @ FSU... then lose a bowl game...

Florida lost at home to Ole Miss. It's not like another 9-4 season is impossible for them.
