Well, I went the other way. I did listen to a lot of metal and hard rock in high school (late 70s - early 80s). Maiden, Priest, Scorpions, hell yeah. But I got into jazz around then too and then spent about 20 years going deeper and deeper into that. Got into a fair bit of adventurous, avant garde stuff that opened up my ears. That was also the time that 80s hair bands started dominating the more known metal scene and I lost interest.
Then in my early 40s I got back into metal with a vengeance. Just turned 58 and I the stuff I listen to now is more extreme than I would have gone when 18. Part of that is just the evolution in music but I don't think my ears would have been ready for Opeth, then Jinjer etc then.
But Steely Dan has ALWAYS been great.
