Depression is a motherfricker and it takes more than “toughening up” to crawl out of it.

I’m 6’0 210 and feel fat as frick and I’m working on it. I can’t imagine how hopeless 300+ would feel like.

While I share a lot of OP’s sentiment, I can very easily see how someone who’s depressed and already overweight could get discouraged. It’s hard to lose ten pounds for a lot of people; if you’re someone who’s 300 pounds and doesn’t even have the confidence to show his face in the gym, I think it could easily seem like an impossible battle
