small-mid sized SUV
Do you want a true SUV (body on frame) or are crossover (unibody) vehicles an option?
For a true SUV, options are very limited and virtually non existent with that gas mileage. Bronco is possibly your only option. I'm probably forgetting something obvious though.
For a crossover, options are virtually limitless. Every manufacturer has 2 or 3 that would fit your wants. The Mrs has a 2016 Mazda cx5 and we love it. No issues whatsoever. 28-30mpg hwy, 24mpg city. When we get her a new vehicle in a few years, we will definitely be shopping Mazda offerings.

I had a Jeep JL Sahara 2.0l Turbo rental we used to take to Johnson Valley from San Diego. Averaged around 24mpg. The turbs was super peppy off the line. If I wanted a daily driver JL I'd consider the 2.0L after driving one for 5 days.
