Just saw his obituary in the morning paper that he has died at age 78.

Jerry was a retired barber, school bus driver and ex-prize fighter who hailed from St. Bernard. I'm old enough to remember his barber shop on Lebeau St. in Arabi where he cut my hair as a young teenager and while he was still boxing in shows at the Municipal Auditorium and later at the St. Bernard Civic Center.

He and Percy Pugh, a cross-town rival from the 9th Ward, put on 2 memorable fights at the old Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans in the late 60's which Percy bested him both times by UD.

Jerry was a hell of a nice guy and a long-time fixture in St. Bernard Parish.

RIP my friend.

Thanks for posting. I was at the second fight between Pelligrini and Pugh. The Municipal Auditorium was electric. Good times. Throw in Teenage Tony Licata (later known as Two Gun Tony Licata) and New Orleans had some very good boxing back then.

When I got into amateur boxing, I was boxing out of the gym in Arabi and Mr. Norman was the coach. We only had about 10 guys at the time training and Mr. Norman would take us up to St. Mary's in the Quarter to spar against some of the guys from that gym. I got in the ring with Licata a few times back then as we were both around the same size and age, but that was as close as it got.

Licata had been training for a lot longer than me, had more amateur matches at that time and I was pretty new to the boxing game. That was when I learned just how much good conditioning was to a boxer. By the time I finished 3 rounds I was totally spent and Licata went on to do 3 more with another guy from our gym.

Tony's been dead damn near 15 years now but he sure packed in a lifetime of fights in his 11 year career by having 71 bouts and going 60-7-4.

He was my bud driver in elementary school and my barber back then. He always had a smile on his face and a great story to share. Rest In Peace Mr. Jerry.

I know he had that shop on Judge Perez and I had heard that his son was cutting hair there after Jerry retired.

His first shop on Lebeau St. in Arabi was a real tiny place and located right across the street from Arabi Honda, a motorcycle shop that was located right next to a bar. I believe the bar was called Livaccari's, but could be mistaken since that was decades ago.

He was in his early 20's and I was in my teens at that time, so that may have been his first barber shop.

His son Kerry still has the shop. I have had flat tops done by both Jerry and Kerry.

I use to get flattops in the summer when I was a kid and let Jerry talk me into getting a "Balboa" one time.

It was also known in other parts as "The 57 Chevy".

He'd do a flattop and the sides were left long enough to be combed back instead of being scalped down.

I liked the look and right before Katrina I visited a local barber near my house and he remember that haircut and I had him cut it like that for old time sake.
