A friend of mine worked on FSU's staff as an athletic trainer. He said Bowden didn't know his own players names and would call them their jersey number at practice. He definitely said he was nothing more than a figure head at the end of his time. He also said Jimbo could give a locker room speech that would make you want to run through a wall.

I remember one game where an FSU player was tossed and when they asked Bobby about it at half, he didn't even know the guy had been kicked out. It was great.
At the end, he was just a figure head, but man, he built them into an unbelievable powerhouse out of nowhere and I loved that he would play anyone anywhere (including us in Tiger Stadium). His team finished in the top 4 for 14 straight years. That will probably never be topped.
He was 5-1 against us in Tiger Stadium (the only loss was the flying oranges game). In fact, he loved Tiger Stadium and said it was the loudest place he ever coached and said it had great mystique. LSU actually offered him the job in 79 and he was torn on what to do, but his FSU team came in and beat LSU and he said that win made him decide to stay at FSU. He said winning in Tiger Stadium was a huge accomplishment for his program and the rest is history.
