Mine did that same thing and it was thermostat.

We have two thermostats, one upstairs and one downstairs. He installed a new one downstairs. The way he has it rigged now is that the downstairs thermostat controls the whole house, the upstairs one will not cause the ac to kick on. He had to order a new circuit board and said it will take a few weeks to arrive
