“Opening Ceremonies” are tonight.
Just curious, has anyone here outside of Central Alabama even heard of this event?

Sumo is def popular, from what I understand plenty of tickets for everything else.

I live in bham and didn’t really hear anything about it. There was one countdown timer by St Vincent Hospital at a tunnel entrance. That little sign is all I heard about it until recently when Birmingham tried to put “lipstick on a pig downtown.” I hope all those pockets that got lined are exposed one day! I don’t know how, but we’re gonna screw this up somehow.

As a resident of a Birmingham suburb, I cannot wait to see how this fails in many epic ways.
Birmingham has pumped millions of dollars into hosting an event that nobody remotely cares about. For over 2 years, the city has heavily advertised this event and they’ve spent exorbitant amounts of money paving roads, posting signs, etc.
Yet at the opening ceremony tonight, I’d guarantee the stadium will be less than 30% filled.
Companies have struggled get responses for corporate ticket sales.
Volunteers have been misled about the amenities and benefits.
Hotels and restaurants have seen little to no change in demand.
Thank you, City of Birmingham, for bringing an event to the city that does nothing but provide a very lame 15 minutes of not so much fame.

I mean, they tore up all of the roads and gutted some of a mountain to spruce up the city and fricked that up already. Didn’t pave anything.
And the airport started renovations this week.

One of the few times I’ve seen the grass around the interstates downtown actually cut and cleaned to give the illusion that it always looks this way.

Seen it on the welcome to Alabama sign on the way to and from Florida

I'm kind of in line with your thinking. Its been a corporate circle jerk over an event nobody really cares about. Kind of a bigger versions of the Regions. It's a net positive because it forced the city to clean up and polish some things downtown, but it's ridiculous to keep seeing the marketing for it when we all know that this is a second rate event.

Plenty of free lodging available on Georgia Road

If it resulted in just some road improvements, I’m all for it. However, I agree it’s been way overplayed by the city and local companies.
