They can alert ICE to the fact that they have arrested them, but after that they have no other actions they can legally take. You can call it ignoring it, but I call it the law.

So ... what ought the sheriff do in the hours/days until ICE responds? Detain a suspect and be accused of nefarious actions?

If a truck-load of obvious illegal immigrants is driving through a county, the sheriff should take zero action, apart from contacting ICE?

My bet is you and I are likely on the same page, in terms of what is typically right and/or wrong in life; but on this issue, I'll agree to disagree with you.
