You don't live in Texas and/or a border state, do you?
I don't for a minute think you sincerely believe that which you're attempting to promulgate. For a brief moment, set aside your feelings, and consider the law of the land regarding legal vs. illegal immigration.
What/how should these law-breakers be dealt with, considering the feckless policies of the US government?
This sheriff is elected to serve and protect the people who live in his county, not the criminals who invade.

He has no authority to enforce US immigration law, those are strictly federal. So by doing what he did he is actually committing a more major crime than illegal entry. No room for nuance here though.

I see your downvote; I wasn't calling you out.
I was genuinely curious about your opinion.
Most Texas sheriffs are up to *here* with being charged with dealing with US immigration law, when the federal government is doing next to nothing to support them--logistically and/or financially.

I think that DHS should enforce the laws as written. This administrations policy of no detentions and enforcement is counter productive, however, last administrations detention push wasn’t productive either.
Ultimately though immigration status is not the concern of local law enforcement, as much as they may want it to be.

They’ll go after him and hope he sues and gets it in front of this Supreme Court

I don't disagree.

So they should ignore law-breakers within their jurisdictions?

On the contrary, most sheriffs want nothing to do with immigration and wish it wasn't a blip on their radars.

They can alert ICE to the fact that they have arrested them, but after that they have no other actions they can legally take. You can call it ignoring it, but I call it the law.

You don't know what the hell you are talking about pal.
Find another board to spread your bullshite...this one's not buying.

So ... what ought the sheriff do in the hours/days until ICE responds? Detain a suspect and be accused of nefarious actions?
If a truck-load of obvious illegal immigrants is driving through a county, the sheriff should take zero action, apart from contacting ICE?
My bet is you and I are likely on the same page, in terms of what is typically right and/or wrong in life; but on this issue, I'll agree to disagree with you.

They should treat them the exact same as every other criminal they encounter. Arrest them, charge them, arraign them, then prosecute them for the state laws they broke.
I don’t disagree with your take that it’s frustrating for local law enforcement but ICE struggles with properly interpreting immigration law, there’s 0% chance small town PD won’t screw it up. It would be an absolute cluster, and realistically would lead to some serious profiling issues.

I know my immigration stance is vastly different than the majority of this board, it’s part of the reason I stopped posting as much since there’s little room for dissent even when I’m 98% in agreement. I do appreciate your willingness to have civil discourse.

Well I'm someone who embraces the opportunity to engage with those whose views differ from mine. Thanks for sharing yours.
I think we'd both agree: The US immigration system is tragically broken; neither political party has the right to point a finger at the other.

Kavanaugh said as much today in his concurrence with the MPP case. This term SCOTUS has low key taken a lot of steps to forcing the issue to Congress to pass meaningful laws addressing it and not relying on EO’s and litigation.
