Like my other post said, SI.com reported this in April. Hurd has a “pars defect” which does not always hurt unless aggravated. Whether he has a spondylolisthesis as well would be something I would think MLB teams will want to know. Seeing as he missed the rest of the season, I’d say he likely does.
Josh Smith was reported as having a “stress reaction”. If reported correctly, that, by definition, is edema (swelling) from inflammation in the pedicles of the spine. You rest it or run the risk of it fracturing.
Hurd’s issue is with the pars. Not the same thing.
