We went there fall 2121. Even with Covid and seasonal closures the valley floor was crowded and afternoon traffic bad due to departing day trippers.
I'd advise staying in the Park. There are hut-like tents available but pretty crowded. The Ahwahnee Inn is at the expensive end but very nice.
There is plenty of easy walking for the 5 year old in the valley floor.
Definitely book ahead.
For the Monterrey/Carmel stay see what the fire policy is. Some hotels bump guests to house the fire fighters.

Thanks for the tip. We’re looking at Intercontinental hotel on Cannery Row. Looks super convenient to everything and right on the water. The air bnb/Vrbo scene looks awesome over there but extremely expensive. I dunno if I can stomach paying damn near a grand in service and cleaning fees.
