In principle, most Democrat or liberal ideas are great. The problem is they get abused, because of our corrupt human nature, so in practice they don't work.
Leftists are basically Satanists, in the sense they worship themselves and other humans. So they see themselves as god like figures who can "do it the right way". How often do we hear, "well, socialism has never been done the right way". It will never be done the right way, because it will always be done by human beings who are flawed.
The Constitution recognizes human nature, therefor creates separations of powers, and competing interests, that will be forced to work together on shared interests. Where this all went wrong was as technology, communication, and transportation advanced, we became less divided by geographical boundaries and now most Americans see themselves in terms of this made up term "democracy", and we no longer believe in federalism or separation of the states.
