Hard to overstate the magnitude of yesterday's upset, because had Tennessee went on to win the NC, their argument at least on paper as the GOAT would have been intriguing.

Had A&M gone on to win the CWS in 1989, they would have had an argument for the best team ever too. If they win that first game against LSU, they enter the CWS with a 59-5 record. Even despite not making it to Omaha, they still finished the season ranked #2.

Many Aggie Alum ball players say that weekend ruined Mark Johnson forever. He was this aggressive coach that coached to win. After that series, he coached to not lose. Never was the same despite taking that late 90’s team to Omaha.

Just an FYI about Mark Johnson. He is one of the finest gentlemen you would ever meet. Outstanding man of character and respect for the game and most importantly others. I was blessed to spend some time with him a while back. To the man, his players said the same thing about him.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone why that was. He was Ron Polk’s assistant at MSU for several years.
Polk respected the game.
