Your plans will take you from downtown to almost in the Bronx (at least) so I’m not sure there is an ideal spot for you. I’d probably stay midtown. I’ve stayed in the Lexington a bunch. Convenient to Grand Central. Not sure about $300 a night for Xmas.
You might get something cheaper closer to Times Square. Have occasionally seen decent rates downtown (walkable to 911 and maybe Tenement).
If needed when you are at 911, consider, checking out Museum of American Indian. Free, clean restrooms, right by the battery. I’d also consider Staten Island ferry, though not sure about in December. And I would definitely see a show.
