Because every mid-Major has a junk baller throwing 80-poo and locating. He’s much more effective against teams not used to seeing his style of pitching.

Same reason LSU has often had problems hitting mid-week pitchers throwing 85 with a good curve and crush pitchers throwing 95 with a good slider on the weekend. It’s all about what you’re used to seeing.
