They don't care if it pisses you off. They don't care if they lose customers over it. Hell, they most likely hate it and don't agree with this craziness as well. But, greed wins. They don't care about customers, only stock price. Whatever will drive that stock price and get executive bonuses much fatter, they will do. It is always about greed. Always has been.
