What is it about an AR that gets people's panties in wad?
For better or worse I think it comes down to two things:
1. the platform was purpose-designed for warfare and is one of the most battle-tested platforms in the world with due defence to the various AKs
2. For the job (as fricked up as it is) it is nearly the perfect weapon. Widely available, highly customizable, reliable, easy to become proficient with, and just plain effective. While .223/5.56 would not be my choice for chambering (unless I had a cache of AP rounds) because outside of some better close combat full autos (FFL/Form 4) the AR platform is hard to beat. Therefore it is the choice of must of the POS mass shooters.
That makes no difference IRL since if you snapped your fingers and made every AR disappear there are plenty of other options to take its place.

I've been shooting for a long time - I've shot just about every common round that exists. I can tell you,. with certainty - that there are few rounds more destructive than a 12 gauge.
I think you hit on an important point about ARs - they are pretty easy to learn to use. A shotgun is a bit more technically challenging to learn. I learned on them bc I was hunting at a young age, but I've seen people try to shoot them that are proficient on other platforms and fail miserably.
