There are also some 12 gauge shotguns that will hold 40 shells - I promise you that's not useful as a hunting weapon - at all - why are those exempted from your critique? I own a few shotguns - but they have wooden stocks so I guess they don't look scary. What is it about an AR that gets people's panties in wad?

For better or worse I think it comes down to two things:
1. the platform was purpose-designed for warfare and is one of the most battle-tested platforms in the world with due defence to the various AKs
2. For the job (as fricked up as it is) it is nearly the perfect weapon. Widely available, highly customizable, reliable, easy to become proficient with, and just plain effective. While .223/5.56 would not be my choice for chambering (unless I had a cache of AP rounds) because outside of some better close combat full autos (FFL/Form 4) the AR platform is hard to beat. Therefore it is the choice of must of the POS mass shooters.
That makes no difference IRL since if you snapped your fingers and made every AR disappear there are plenty of other options to take its place.
