Book Haller seems a little more slick and sleazy, a little less always do the right thing, although show Haller has that. It just doesn't come through as well.
I think this is accurate. I always interpret Haller as a (as you described) slick guy who acts in a sleazy way to reach what he believes is justice in his world view. Now I will say, I’ve read these books multiple times the past five years (just discovered them). This book does have him unsure and uncertain about the big case, but never does he seem helpless which the show portrays way too much.
They make him out to be like lost and answerless. Even when Haller is lost and without answers, he always has a strong enough arrogance and self confidence to not show it. The show does not match that feeling for me, and that alone is massively disappointing.
