My pot has heavy soot on it from my burner. What causes this and how can I prevent it?

You need to adjust the airflow on the back end of the burner. Keep turning it until the flames don't have yellow tips on them. They should be all blue.

To help remove the soot, I recommend Bar Keeper's Friend powder cleaner.

Hell I wish I knew that a long time ago. I once threw a good burner away and bought a new one because the old one was causing a lot of black soot. Thanks for that info.
