I remember being in the Deacon’s meeting when he announced it very clearly. Floored me. He kept it up for a long time after that and poked fun at his one eye, baldness, and hearing aids all the time. All the while being a beast of a man with a ton of presence. I can’t say he was the best preacher, pastor, administrator, or counselor I’ve ever been under but he’s the best person that I’ve seen all those rolled into one in a single person. I feel like the church is just now coming out of that loss combined with covid.
Genuinely the only time he looked weak during the whole ordeal was the last week he preached before he passed away. We knew it was coming soon.
Sorry for your loss, but congrats on having a heck of a cousin. He represented New Orleans, LSU, and Christ very well as long as I’ve knew him.
My favorite Gary story for you to share or encourage you if you didn’t know it already….
I run most Saturday mornings and my wife would occasionally ask me to go to HEB afterwards. One time I went and ran into him and we talked a while in the fruit and veggie section. He said he did all the shopping on Saturday mornings and enjoyed seeing people. We talked for a bit and got on with our shopping. I made it a few aisles and I saw him talking to somebody. Made it a few more and saw him talking to somebody else. I kept outpacing him 2:1 because he always had somebody stop him. I forgot something and had to double back and he was talking to somebody else yet again. I joked that this must have been a frustrating experience and he said he’s never felt that way. One of the people he talked to has been at the church for 10 years and just met her for the first time. He said it’s hard to be a personal minister to 2k+ people and he didn’t mind taking 3 hours to shop because it gave him an opportunity to meet people that he can’t being the pastor of a church that large. Such a humbling experience for me as I would never think of it that way.
