Financial question regarding repairing truck or buying used one.

Buddy has a 2008 chevy silverado 1500, obviously paid for. 192,000 miles. Lifter has gone out and the mechanic recommended replacement. Mechanic says the replaced lifters may be a long term solution or maybe only last a little while. Lifters go for $6000, "new" engine goes for $9000.
Question: Fix with lifters and keep on keeping on.
"New" motor and keep on keeping on.
Sell as is with discounted price for issue.
Fix and sell with "new" motor.
or whatever else. He cannot afford a new truck right now.

Quick scan of KBB shows value of regular cab with standard option and no mechanical issues is ~6-9k. New trucks are 50k+? Get the lifters and ride on. Hopefully prices have come down in the next 5 years. But if not and he needs a new truck in 5 years, see if he can negotiate 6k off the price. Would essentially net him $0 with time to build up a new truck fund.

What’s symptom of lifter issue? The lifters on my 2002 started tapping really loud at about 200k miles. Switched to Shell rotella Diesel engine oil and the quieted down. Currently at 340 k miles with no issues.

That seems high for lifters. Is $6k for just lifters or more? He should get a second opinion.
ETA: If he just started hearing it, I would try an engine oil additive to see if they are just gunked up.

Sounds like a 5.3 with the variable cylinder issue. Only do a new engine if it has the variable cylinder feature deleted. Then put another 150k miles on it.

no, a full set of new lifters go for around $500 so tell them to go frick themselves.
bring it to a real mecanic and have the lifters replaced with non afm lifters and a new cam and it will have more power with better gas mileage then when new. it shouldnt cost him more the $2k tops
i just had a complete 6.0 engine rebuilt for my 03 silverado for $4200. the 08 and newer engines are slightly different but rebuild costs are the same

Same with mine. Sounded like old diesel tractor tapping loud. Heavier oil made it stop. Not saying it will help his just know it stopped mine from tapping and I’m still driving 140k miles later.
