We will have a day in Basel next year as we start a river cruise from there. We are very much looking forward to the whole trip

If I had one day - start at Spalentor gate and walk through the old town, stop at the Rathaus plaza and continue up to the cathedral. Then walk down to the river directly downhill behind the cathedral. You'll see the water taxis there and head across to Kleinbasel (small Basel). On that side of the river head to Braueri Fischerstube and have a few Ueli Biers. Also maybe go for a swim in the Rhine if it is warm. Everyone else will be. Then head back across the river and wander all the small streets of the old town. Find a cafe you like and end the evening there. There's great art and museums but I'd just soak up the old town.
