How far are you moving? That has a lot to do with the cost. See this article: LINK / I don't think $1,700 is unreasonable depending on how far it is. If you're just relocating across town or something, then yeah that seems a bit much. If that's the case though, just rent a uhaul and get some friends to help for pizza.

Geez, this makes me feel like shite.
Just moved a 2 bedroom apartment into a house 1/4 mile away with:
my nephew(2.5hrs)-$30
my BIL(7hrs)- lunch
good friend-(2hrs)-a thank you
I did however lift half of every heavy item in that place. Washer, dryer, deep freeze, beds, couch, etc.

You can rent the truck and do loads yourself, hire movers just to load and unload the big stuff but you still drive the truck. Save a lot of money that way.
