I don't think Sony is taking any kind of a stand here. It's just not really feasible to redo the last 30 minutes of their movie, which had to be the most expensive part of the movie to make.

They wanted them to edit the film to put less emphasis on the Statue and darken the lighting to make it less visible. So there wouldn't need to be reshoot. Sony still told them to kick rocks.
