Your house is roughly a little bigger than half the size of mine and most of my neighbors, Most over 6000 sq feet all have two to three AC units some 4.
Everyone here has 25kw Generac, two of my neighbors just got installed for around 8k. They will not power everything but will get you through storm. They aren’t the best but here in Mobile we don’t expect power to be out more than two weeks max. In Louisiana apparently everyone wants twice that much no matter size of house with an industrial rating. My sister lives in 1500 sq foot house in Baton Rouge and wants to spend 20k for a generator.
I think it’s more a cultural than anything else. We are not planning on hurricane parties and get together every night after storm. I am getting the hell out of here if i can. My cousins and relatives in Louisiana, want the ice cream to stay frozen and they are going to enjoy the time off.
That said look around a lot. my neighbor said the cost for that exact same generator and installation ranged from 8k to 18k just here in Mobile area, which is nuts. He shopped it around everywhere. Some of these mfers will just come to your house look you over and decide what you are worth

A lot of folks in Louisiana have experience dealing with long term outages and as has been stated in the thread the cost to increase KW is minimal compared to the overall installation costs.
Reliability is #1 and most would agree that liquid cooled stomps air cooled in that category but to get a liquid cooled you typically have to step up to 30kw or above.
Go back and read some of the threads about how many new Generac air cooled crapped out their first real test, and how many others were suggesting only running them part of the day so they don’t overheat. If your going to spend the money for an actual standby generator most will actually want it to run 24hrs a day.
That said I have a 20kw B&S air cooled with over 800hrs and I have had no issues running it 24/7 when necessary (while shutting down for regular maintenance per recommended hrs).
