This is mostly true. WVU isn't an elite program but they played for a national championship in 88, had an outside shot in 93 (if WVU would have dominated Florida like Florida dominated them in the Sugar Bowl the AP poll and Coaches poll would probably have crowned WVU because FSU and Nebraska game was 18-16 FSU), and also in 2007 was another missed opportunity.
So not quite once in a lifetime. More like once every 15 years or so since 1980. Nehlen changed the WVU football program. They are a solid tier 2 program in college football. NIL might knock them down though. Seems like college football is going NFL lite.
