To each their own but I’ve noticed the parents we know that are super strict with time limits on things are the ones whose kids throw massive fits to use the things.
If you’re an active parent who is participating your kids will most likely want to do other things, I don’t see a problem with letting them play video games or watch an iPad after they’ve been playing outside for 4 hours or if I need to take a nap in the middle of the day on a weekend.

I agree with you there. And we aren't nazis about it for the most part. During the week we try and keep a time frame on it. During the weekend, she is usually outside with the neighborhood friends playing. At night she can play it all she wants which typically lasts for an hour or so and then she gets bored.

I think this is the most important thing. It's not just kids that have a million distractions to pull them every which way these days, as parents we also have a million distractions. I have to constantly remind myself to "put down the phone and play with your kids" because these damn cell phones are built to peak your interest the SECOND you hear that "ding".
In some ways it's worst for me because I work in IT and that ding could be something going down that I need to look into - but over time I've learned my boss will call me if it's something I need to look into and have slowly been able to pull away from picking up my phone every time it goes ding.

Your dad never threw the baseball or football with you? Never kicked your arse in pickup basketball?
that's the craziest thing I was about to comment on... my dad had never even touched a soccer ball before I started playing in elementary school. The old man was out in my back yard passing and kicking the sucker with me every afternoon after I started playing, the moments I played with my dad in the backyard growing up are some of the fondest memories I have.
