From a song "craftmanship" standpoint, they had very few equals. Obviously, it is cliche to cite the Beatles, but they were the prototypes of a music industry (producers and engineers, particularly) that had evolved to the point where such craftsmanship, while still amazing in hindsight, was more approachable that just a few years before.

So, part of this was "right place, right time." But the work put into, particularly, this album remains impressive almost 50 years later.

That's right. Next year, DSOTM turns 50.
